Not many people have their 750th birthday celebrated, not unless they are a very famous and influential historical figure. Well, this person falls very firmly into that category.
Born in Florence, Italy 750 years ago, Dante Alighieri is one of the best-known and most influential poets of all time. His most famous work is considered one of the greatest in world literature – the epic poem, the Divine Comedy.
The 750th anniversary of Dante’s birth has been recognised at an event in Dublin organised by the Italian Institute of Culture in conjunction with University College Cork.
One of the speakers; Dr Alessandro Scafi of the University of London spoke to Mark about the significance of Dante’s work today.
