Brought up in the west of Ireland by Breton parents, speaking Breton, Irish, French and English, Olwen Fouéré has performed the classics including Shakespeare at the National Theatre, but also balanced on the borderline of performance art, dance and music, embracing the difficult and unexpected.
Described by many critics as having a fierce stage persona, she regularly is used by directors to channel the vision in their productions, having performed extensively on stage in theatres around the world over the past three decades, while also dabbling in projects for both the small and big screen, having worked alongside playwright Pat McCabe and Oscar winner Sean Penn.
Her latest project Riverrun is inspired by the extraordinary musicality of the text of James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake and the voice of the river running through it.
Premiering at the Galway Arts Festival in 2013, it has since toured extensively to widespread critical acclaim, scooping the Herald Archangel Award, one of the most prestigious awards of the Edinburgh Festival in the process.
Ahead of its return to Dublin, Olwen joined Wendy in studio to discuss her new found love for Joyce’s work.
