The Very Revd. Maria Jansson-UNESCO Campaign for Waterford Cathedrals

“In a city like Waterford, you don’t have to seek the history out: it shoves itself in your face. This year, the city celebrates its 1,100th birthday, and everywhere you turn you see the evidence: intact sections of the old city walls, towers, medieval cathedrals.†So says Jennifer O Connell in a recent edition of the Irish Times.

Founded in 914 by Regnall, a Viking adventurer, whose name lives on in Reginald’s Tower, Waterford’s golden era was in the 18th century when the city’s two impressive cathedrals were built – both designed by John Roberts- who also built the Assembly Rooms on the Mall in 1788, which is now the Theatre Royal and City Hall.

On the tercentennial anniversary of the birth of John Roberts, both the Catholic and Protestant Cathedrals made the news recently at the start of a campaign to gain UNESCO World Heritage Site status for these cathedrals

The Very Revd. Maria Jansson, tells Rojo more about this new campaign.
